Annual Visitor Attractions Survey

This Survey of Visits to Visitor Attractions is conducted annually by the national tourist boards of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The purpose of the survey is to monitor trends in the visitor attraction sector throughout the UK and to improve the wider understanding of the dynamics of the sector.

The findings contribute to regional and national estimates of the economic impact of tourism and inform regional development and planning work. The results of the survey also enable operators to benchmark their operation both within their category, within their region and across the sector as a whole.

The Visits to Visitor Attractions Survey is a self completion survey; there is no obligation for any visitor attraction to supply data and as a result the participation or non-participation of major individual attractions can have a significant impact upon the proportion of visits within each region and attraction category.

In addition, visitor attractions have the option of taking part in the survey anonymously, meaning not all visitor attractions that participate in the survey are named in the report or included in ranked lists of attractions.
