STEAM

The Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Monitor (STEAM)is an economic model owned and operated by Gobal Tourism Solutions (GTS). The model aims to quantify the local economic impact of tourism. Data is collected from a wide range of sources including bedstock and occupancy data, attractions surveys, events information and data from tourist information centres. Information is analysed to provide outputs on:

  • Day and staying visitors estimates: revenue generated, number of tourist visits, number of tourist days
  • Analysis of bedstock and availability
  • Estimates of employment supported by tourism
  • Estimates of traffic implications of tourism
  • Annual trend information
  • In 2005 the tourism sector contributed £2.45 billion to the local economy in Lancashire and Blackpool with 59.7 million visitors helping to support just under 50,000 tourism related jobs.
